On the last Friday of Ramadan, Consulate General Jerusalem hosted a special
performance by the Palestinian musical group Al-Kamandjati at the Palestinian
National Theater in East Jerusalem. Playing with the group was American
contra bassist Richard "Dobbs" Hartshorne, a former Apple Hill Chamber
Player, who spent the month of Ramadan giving concerts and workshops in
Jerusalem and the West Bank. His special renderings of American folktales, set
to music and delivered in Arabic, were crowd-pleasers. The concert also
featured a number of classic Arabic pieces. Earlier in the day, "Dobbs" also
gave a consulate-sponsored music workshop to a group of elementary school
children at an orphanage in Issawiya.

The children's workshop highlighted the importance of sharing culture and
music, especially with those who have little access to it. After Dobbs finished
playing a suite by Bach, he asked the children how the music made them feel.
"It made me feel like I was coming home," said one child.
