Bolivia

In 1969 I went to Bolivia as a Peace Corps volunteer to play in the National Symphony. It was the greatest experience of my life. I returned for the first time In 2011 and  played the 6 Solo Suites of Bach during a weekend at a Palace in Cochabamba now an arts center.

In 2005 with a gift from Dan Ingals I wrote a one man show with interactive media: DREAMS OF BOLIVIA It tells of my intense, dramatic, hilarious and exciting 3 years in Bolivia. The National Symphony, my jazz group; The Tiahuanaco Brass, becoming a father, scaling the highest mountains in South America. The most beautiful, engaging, savage and funniest place I've ever been.I premiered it live in Palo Alto California. Then in 2020 during the pandemic (following a request from my mother) I filmed it.

playing the 6 Bach Suites in 2011

While I was there in 2011 I thought a lot about a tour I had done in 1069 with 2 other musicians and two ballet dancers. It was  a trip to the Altiplano to play for the Aymara people who lived there in small villages. For me it was both fantastic and formative. So I decided I would come back in two years and play again in those same villages and see if anyone remembered. That trip was made into a movie shown on PBS.

About the tour in 1969
The same as above but in Spanish

In the run up to the 2013 trip i made this short memory of the original 1969 tour
